From the 29th of November until the 3rd of December 2017, the AzPlay International Festival of Independent Games will hold its 8th edition. The Festival organised by Azkuna Zentroa continues with its bet on videogames as an ever more important cultural and industrial phenomenon for yet another year.
Yet again, in this edition the Indie videogame and Basque developers are the attention focus of AzPlay. The Indie phenomenon is already greatly consolidated within the industry as the essential agglutinating disruptive renovator of Art and Technology. Local creators are looking for their niche on the international scene by default in this sector, and AzPlay provides a springboard for their projection.
This is the most international edition to date. The AzPlay 8th International Festival of Independent Games has received 432 videogames presented by 63 different countries. The Competition is the Festival cornerstone around which the other activities revolve.
In its desire to become an international reference on the Indie scene, the AzPlay Festival has reached several agreements during 2017. On the one hand, AzPlay has shared its most valuable information for developers and creators with similar events and initiatives. And on the other hand, AzPlay has been able to access other communities thanks to the agreements entered into with the Nordic Game Conference, Finnish Northern Game Summit, Dubai DGC Games, Games Slovenia, Ukraine GetIt!, Game Boss, PAD, DEV, and the Indie initiatives Adopt my Game and Indie Couch.
In this line special mention must be given to the agreement reached with Nordic Game to hold the qualifying round for the Nordic Game Discovery Contest to be held in Malmö, Sweden, in 2018. One of the AzPlay finalist developers will take part in the Nordic Game Conference, which is a great opportunity for Indie developers to have direct access to the best videogame investors and publishers worldwide.
In 2018 Azkuna Zentroa, ETOPIA and Dortmunder U will develop under the label AzPlay new concepts and devices in gamification of a cultural space. The questions of: How can game developers help an institution to gamify the physical places and engage with hyperlocal communities? will be one aspect of the development process.
