14.09.2019 - 17.11.2019
Contemporary Art from Dortmund shows the exhibition of the Emerging Artists Festival from 14.09. to 17.11. on the second floor of the Dortmunder U. Here, aspiring artists are brought into focus and at the same time have the opportunity to network with each other and develop further. The exhibition shows works by ten artists selected by an international jury. As part of the smARTplaces project, representatives of art, culture and science from the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven selected the artworks. The artists from Dortmund are going to visit artists of Eindhoven for a mutual exchange and took the opportunity to meet the artists there at the Van Abbemuseum and the Contemporary Arts Center (CAT). In addition to the exhibition, there will be a varied and free program of workshops and lectures that will address the challenges of artistic and creative fields of work, as well as the possibilities of professionalization.
The ten young artists will show their works on the second floor and have made them their own in a creative process in cooperation with students and graduates of Dortmund universities. Both the graphic appearance and the exhibition design as well as the photographs and the program for mediation and networking were created in cooperation with the local students and graduates. For the third time the Kunstverein Dortmund, the Kulturbüro Dortmund, the UZWEI of the U as well as the WILO-Foundation are organizing the Emerging Artists Festival this year as reliable partners!
The festival is once again internationally connected: Together with the EU-project smARTplaces it asks for new forms of contemporary digital cultural work in an international framework. In the course of this, a cooperation with the Van Abbbemuseum and an excursion with the Emerging Artists to the cultural centre of Eindhoven will take place.
Discover new people, new stories and art from different cultures and countries. That’s exactly what the new smARTplaces app is all about. The mobile application offers new forms of virtual storytelling that can be explored by users across Europe.
“The app has been in development for two years. A co-production of seven institutions developed by the project’s technology partner, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, Finland, together with menschortweb. It was really a love work. We are happy to finally show it to the public.” – Britta Lerch, smARTplaces project coordinator
A special feature is the Storyworld: a slot machine for stories that leads you through many different and annotated storylines into a cultural institution. The concept for this feature was developed by the team at Storylab kiU, a research project at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts.
As part of Emerging Artists, there is a digital tour around the Dortmunder U where selected works by Emerging Artists Dortmund can be viewed in public space.
The smARTplaces app is optimized for smartphones and can be downloaded for iOS and Android.
