30.11.2017 - 03.12.2017
The Innovative Citizen Festival at the Dortmunder U represents a more democratic approach to technology. For the first time since the beginning of the festival in 2014 it will not only take place in the Dortmunder U but also in the Union Gewerbehof as well as with some activities in Zaragoza (Spain) at Etopia Center for Art & Technology. The festival, which was designed in co-operation with the Fraunhofer UMSICHT Institute, will take place from the 30th of November until the 3rd of December 2017 in Dortmund as well as from the 13th to 22nd of November in Zaragoza, Spain.
In lectures, conversations, and workshops, you can learn about the possibilities of modern technology, how to use it critically and thus become a little more independent. Whether you ferment your own drinks, build your own robot, or craft design lamps from garbage, you will break free of the established separations of consumer and producer as well as amateur and expert. Take matters into your own hand as the informed, critical and technophilic person that is the Innovative Citizen. To complete the picture there will be an Energetic Salon, a play on how to save the world, a breakfast for makers, and of course parties.
The subjects of the festival are all linked to urban development and are as relevant as they are interesting. The topic of Food&Farming is focused on the future of food und its production. There will be workshops and lectures about urban aquafarming, alternative sources of food, and preservation trough fermentation, just to name a few. The second topic is tied to the idea of sustainability. The Circular City is an antidote to the throw-away culture which came into existence in the last couple of decades as a result of the ever more cheap consumer goods available. Instead of getting rid of broken and unloved items and therefore just distributing waste you can learn how to make them usable again in upcycling-workshops and become more independent in the process. Another thematic thread is Urban Production where we will yet again take out our 3D-printers and gardening robots.
Furthermore, all who are bored of wearing the same regular jeans will get their money’s worth with our workshops under the topic of Innovative Textiles.
We look forward to learning, eating, debating, and celebrating the Maker culture with you. For more information visit www.innovative-citizen.de. Application is required for the workshops and some of the lectures. Some activities require a fee. Together with Etopia we will offer live streamings as well as workshops with international participation.
The festival is part of the project smARTplaces, which is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and takes place in cooperation with ETOPIA – Centre for Art and Technology in Zaragoza, Spain.
