Dortmunder U

Dortmunder U – Centre for Art and Creativity (GER) has developed the concept of smARTplaces, now embraced by all partners, and is the leading organisation of the project.

Opened in 2010, Dortmunder U has since become an international representative cultural institution, a new landmark of the region and a symbol for contemporary culture in the digital age. Located in the former storage tower of the Union-brewery, various facilities make a contribution to the development of new formats in art and mediation. Dortmunder U and its partners have become a well-known entity on Germany’s cultural map regarding the inclusion of digital media and user generated content. The house attracts high-calibre events and conventions and a young, open-minded audience.

As a lighthouse of urban development, the U is synonymous with a particular regional identity and a sense of belonging. 9 partnering institutions work together to create a place for everyone: Museum Ostwall, Hartware MedienKunstVerein, University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund, TU Dortmund University, UZWEI_Centre for Cultural Education, the european centre for creative economy (ecce), a cinema, the media library and the gastronomic services.

The Dortmunder U shows and organises ca. 30 exhibitions and 1.500 events (incl. workshops, filmevents, clubnights, concerts, performances, guided tours, incentives, conferences etc.) every year.
